Fiona’s First Birthday Session
Woodstock Cake Smash Photography
So many things happen in that first year of a baby’s life. From the moment your little one is born, to their first birthday they grow and change so much in such a short time. From learning to hold their neck up to rolling over and smiling, to giggling & crawling and sometimes even taking those first steps. Celebrating your little one’s first birthday is such a wonderful way to document who & where your sweet baby is right now.
One of the things I love most about first birthday sessions is the curiosity at this age. Around 10-12 months, babies begin to become more aware of their surroundings outside of their caregivers. I love seeing that curiosity and how babies at this age explore the world around them (and their cake) with such focus.
We started off the session with images of Fiona and her Mama, along with portraits of her exploring the studio. This allowed us to get some pre-cake images and gave Fiona the chance to warm up.
It’s normal for your little one to take a bit of time to warm up to me and my camera. My studio is calm & peaceful, so as not to overstimulate your child. We want them to explore at their own pace. A baby-led approach always leads to more pleasant experience (which means more authentic smiles and portraits for you to enjoy).
My heart melted seeing Fiona snuggle up with Mom before she dove into her first birthday cake.
Finally we brought out the cake! Fiona was not too sure what she thought about her birthday cake at first…her Mom showed her what to do (I think she liked it).
After a few samples, Fiona started to catch on to this whole cake idea!
After the cake, we gave little Miss Fiona a bubble bath in organic lavender baby body wash. Babies tend to love this part best - and this means no sticky hands on the way home from the session.
After bath time is done, we wrap Miss Fiona up in a fluffy white towel to dry off for some snuggles with Mama!
Let’s celebrate your baby’s first year with simple cake smash session, free of cluttered props & keep the focus on your little one! If you’re interested in documenting your family or little one during this time, let’s schedule an informal chat!
