What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
Fall is a busy time for family photographers! Fall is such a beautiful season in our area; lots of families want their portraits with fall colors as a backdrop for their photos. Many clients want their family photos taken in the fall so that they have the perfect family photo for Christmas cards.
Fall is also a busy time for families! With school back in session, fall sports, and every other extracurricular activity, it’s no wonder we’re so busy. After the session is booked, it falls on mom (usually) to choose everyone’s outfits for the session. It’s another thing on the to-do list!
As a portrait photographer and mom, I understand how stressful this season is for my clients. What to Wear for Fall Photos
1. Start with the End in Mind - Think about where you want these portraits to go in your home. If you’re dreaming of a family portrait in the living room, look around that space and see if you can define your style. Once you have a style in mind, you can start thinking about which outfits you can wear that will complement this space!
2. Start with Mom - I recommend starting with one outfit and then building out the wardrobe from there. We usually start with mom because, let’s be honest, she may have the toughest time finding an outfit.
3. Coordinate, But Don’t Match - The days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit are long gone, thankfully. But it is still worth mentioning! Don’t try to match everyone’s outfit perfectly. Instead, shoot for coordinating colors and styles. Work with the same theme, so everyone blends nicely, but no one is standing out from the rest.
4. Add Fun Fall Layers (if applicable) - If your photos are being taken outside, you can add in some fun fall layers if it works with your style. Maybe a jacket or a scarf that will look nice but not stand out too much. If your session is taking place in a studio, then you don’t really need to worry about staying warm and might forgo the layers!
5. Less is More with Accessories - I always recommend less jewelry and accessories. And, remember to take your Apple Watch off! There is nothing wrong with your accessories; we just don’t want them to distract from your beautiful faces or look dated in a few years.
