How to Create Your Dream Family Portrait Gallery Wall

Our family is the most important part of our lives! Your family portraits deserve to be lovingly and prominently displayed in your home where you and everyone who enters your home can see them. Imagine being able to show off your amazing family with your dream family portrait gallery wall. If you want a family portrait wall but feel overwhelmed even thinking about how to make it happen, I’m here to help.

As a full-service Woodstock family photographer, I take care of this for my clients, but I’m happy to share my basic process to create a gallery wall here with you.

Create Your Family Portrait Gallery Wall in 5 Steps

1. Envision the Final Gallery Wall - Take a moment just to close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and envision your beautiful family gallery wall. How does it make you feel? What does it look like? Do you have a specific image coming to your mind? If not, that’s totally okay! Feel free to look around online for inspiration. I love coming up with design ideas for my clients and offering my expertise.

2. Choose the Space - Where will your gallery wall go? It might seem odd to choose the space before you even see the images, but this will help you through the rest of the process. Choose a wall in your home that you’ll easily be able to see every day. Is there a wall that already has something? This could be the time to make some simple redesign tweaks around your home so that this wall is ready for your gallery wall!

3. Decide Style and Layout - Again, it might seem odd to decide this before you take the photos, but this makes all the difference! Knowing this will help craft the perfect family session to achieve what you’re looking for. Think about what style frame you want for these images. Aren’t sure? Look around your home to see what would coordinate well. Think about a layout for the gallery wall. Do you like the look of three images? Different sizes? Landscape or portrait? This will all help us immensely!

4. Your Family Photography Session - Now is the day of your family portrait session! You get to relax and enjoy your amazing family while capturing the images that will tell your family’s story. With my clients, I love heading into the session with an idea of how they want to display their images. This helps me feel confident, knowing I’m taking the right photos to make their dreams come true.

5. Order and Install - After the session, don’t wait long to order your artwork. The truth is this project will be easy to put off unless you have a deadline. My clients return to the studio one to two weeks after their session for their image reveal and ordering appointment. We look through all of their beautiful images, and the client chooses their favourites. Then, I’m able to mock up designs with your images so you can see exactly how they will look on the wall. Clients feel confident knowing they will love their gallery wall! The best part? I even order, deliver, and install their portraits for them! It’s the greatest part of my week.
